Why convert AVIF to JPG
AVIF is a newer format that many editors, office programs and upload forms cannot open yet. JPG works in nearly all of them.
Typical situations
- Opening an image saved from a modern website in an older photo editor
- Attaching a picture to an email or document that does not accept AVIF
- Sending a picture to someone whose phone or computer cannot show AVIF
What to watch for
This tool needs a browser that can display AVIF, which current versions of the major browsers can. JPG stores standard 8-bit color, so any high dynamic range data in the AVIF is reduced, and transparent areas are filled with the background color you pick.
Tips for better results
- Your browser must support AVIF to read the file, and current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari do.
- Set the background color if the AVIF has transparent areas, since JPG will fill them in.
- AVIF files can be very small, so the JPG will often be noticeably larger at the same quality.

Frequently asked questions
Why does my AVIF file not convert?
The converter relies on your browser to read AVIF. If your browser is old, update it or try a current version of Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion runs in your browser using your own device, so the files are not sent to Convert In Place or anyone else. See how it works for a way to check this yourself.
Is there a limit on file size or number of files?
You can use it as often as you like. One batch holds up to 200 files, and each file can be up to 200 MB. Large files and long batches depend on the memory of your device, and phones handle less than computers.
