Why convert HEIC to JPG
iPhones and iPads save photos as HEIC by default. Many Windows programs, email clients and upload forms cannot open that format, while JPG opens almost anywhere. Converting is the quickest way to share or print a photo from your phone.
Typical situations
- Sending iPhone photos to a Windows PC, an Android phone or a relative who cannot open HEIC
- Uploading a photo to a form, marketplace or job portal that only accepts JPG
- Printing at a shop or kiosk that does not read HEIC files
What to watch for
JPG is lossy, so the photo is compressed once more during conversion. A quality setting of 90 or higher keeps the result visually close to the original. Extra data stored by the phone, such as depth information, live photo video and location tags, is not copied into the JPG, which is useful if you want to share a picture without its metadata.
Tips for better results
- Pick quality 90 to 95 for photos you plan to print, and 80 to 85 for photos you only share on screen.
- Convert a whole camera roll in one batch and take the ZIP, so you do not have to download photos one at a time.
- Keep the HEIC originals somewhere safe, because they are the best copy of the picture.
Other ways to do it without Convert In Place
Make your iPhone save photos as JPG instead of HEIC
Open Settings, tap Camera, tap Formats and choose Most Compatible. New photos are then saved as JPG. Photos you already took stay in HEIC.
Convert HEIC to JPG on a Mac
Open the HEIC file in Preview, choose File, then Export, pick JPEG as the format and save.
Convert HEIC to JPG on Windows 10 and 11
Windows may need the HEIF Image Extensions by Microsoft, and on some systems the HEVC Video Extensions, from the Microsoft Store before it can open HEIC. After that you can open the file in Paint and save it as a JPEG picture.

Frequently asked questions
Why can my computer not open HEIC files?
HEIC uses HEVC video compression, and some systems need an extra codec or an app update before they can show it. Converting to JPG avoids that requirement.
How do I convert HEIC to JPG on Windows 10 or Windows 11?
Add your HEIC files to the converter above and download the JPG files, with nothing to install. If you prefer built in tools, the section above explains the Microsoft Store extensions and Paint.
How do I convert HEIC to JPG on an iPhone?
You can switch the camera to Most Compatible so new photos are saved as JPG, or open this page in Safari on the iPhone and convert photos you already have. The files are processed on the phone and are not uploaded.
How do I convert HEIC to JPG on a Mac?
Preview can export a HEIC file as JPEG one picture at a time. To convert a whole folder at once, add all the files to this converter and download the ZIP.
How do I open or convert HEIC on Android or a Samsung phone?
Recent versions of Android usually open HEIC in the gallery. If an app or a form refuses the file, open this page in your phone browser, choose the photos and download the JPGs. The files are processed on the phone and are not uploaded.
Is it safe to convert HEIC to JPG online?
With a typical online converter your photos are sent to someone else's server. Here the conversion runs in your browser, so the photos stay on your device. In the Network tab of your browser developer tools you can see that no file is sent; the only request after a conversion is a small anonymous count (tool name and language).
How do I convert many HEIC files to JPG at once?
Select or drag in as many files as you like. They convert one after another, and the Download all as ZIP button gives you every JPG in one file.
Can I convert HEIC to JPG for free?
Yes. There is no account, no watermark and no limit on how often you use it, only a size limit per file and 200 files per batch.
Does converting HEIC to JPG reduce quality?
JPG is lossy, so a little detail is lost, but at a quality setting of 90 or higher the difference is rarely visible. Keep the HEIC originals if you want the best possible copy.
What happens to Live Photos?
Only the still image is converted. The short video part of a Live Photo is not included in the JPG.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion runs in your browser using your own device, so the files are not sent to Convert In Place or anyone else. See how it works for a way to check this yourself.
Is there a limit on file size or number of files?
You can use it as often as you like. One batch holds up to 200 files, and each file can be up to 200 MB. Large files and long batches depend on the memory of your device, and phones handle less than computers.
