Why convert JPG to PNG
Some programs and workflows require PNG, and PNG is safe for repeated editing because saving it does not compress the image again.
Typical situations
- Opening a photo in a tool that insists on PNG
- Editing a picture many times without adding more JPG compression after each save
- Preparing a picture to which you will add transparency in an image editor
What to watch for
Converting JPG to PNG does not restore detail that JPG compression discarded, and it does not add transparency. The PNG will look the same as the JPG but the file will usually be larger.
Tips for better results
- The PNG will be larger than the JPG, often several times larger for a photograph.
- Converting does not remove existing blocky artifacts, so start from the best JPG you have.
- If you need smaller files, WebP is a better target than PNG for photographs.

Frequently asked questions
Does converting JPG to PNG improve image quality?
No. The PNG preserves exactly what the JPG shows, including its compression artifacts. It only prevents further quality loss from future saves.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion runs in your browser using your own device, so the files are not sent to Convert In Place or anyone else. See how it works for a way to check this yourself.
Is there a limit on file size or number of files?
You can use it as often as you like. One batch holds up to 200 files, and each file can be up to 200 MB. Large files and long batches depend on the memory of your device, and phones handle less than computers.
