Why convert PNG to JPG
A PNG photograph or large screenshot can be many times bigger than the same picture as a JPG. Converting is the usual fix when a form has a file size limit or an email attachment is too big.
Typical situations
- Shrinking a large screenshot or scanned photo so it fits an email or form limit
- Turning a PNG photo into a file that every device and website accepts
- Reducing the weight of images before adding them to a presentation
What to watch for
JPG does not support transparency, so transparent areas turn into the background color you choose. Sharp text, thin lines and flat-color graphics can show faint artifacts after JPG compression, so keep those as PNG if they must stay crisp.
Tips for better results
- Try quality 85 first and look at the result. Lower it step by step until you notice a difference.
- If the picture contains small text or thin lines, keep the PNG or use quality 95 to avoid blur.
- Pictures with transparency need a background color, so choose one that matches the page they will appear on.

Frequently asked questions
Should I convert a screenshot with text from PNG to JPG?
Only if file size matters more than crispness. JPG compression can blur the edges of small text. For text and interface screenshots, PNG usually looks cleaner.
How do I convert PNG to JPG without losing quality?
JPG always discards some data, but quality 90 to 95 keeps the difference hard to see for photographs. For screenshots with text, keep the PNG.
How do I make a PNG smaller for an upload form?
Convert it to JPG and use the Maximum file size option, for example Under 500 KB. The tool lowers quality, and size only if needed, to fit the limit.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion runs in your browser using your own device, so the files are not sent to Convert In Place or anyone else. See how it works for a way to check this yourself.
Is there a limit on file size or number of files?
You can use it as often as you like. One batch holds up to 200 files, and each file can be up to 200 MB. Large files and long batches depend on the memory of your device, and phones handle less than computers.
