Why convert AVIF to PNG
PNG is accepted by nearly every editor and website builder, which makes it a reliable fallback for AVIF images you cannot open elsewhere.
Typical situations
- Getting a lossless copy of an AVIF for editing
- Keeping a transparent AVIF graphic usable in tools that do not read AVIF
- Putting an AVIF image into a slide, document or design app
What to watch for
The PNG is lossless relative to what your browser decodes from the AVIF, so it will be larger than the AVIF, often much larger. Your browser must be able to read AVIF for the conversion to work.
Tips for better results
- Expect the PNG to be much larger than the AVIF, because AVIF compresses very efficiently.
- Use PNG for graphics and screenshots and JPG for photos if file size matters.
- Transparency is preserved, so you can place the result on any background.

Frequently asked questions
Is AVIF to PNG lossless?
The PNG stores the decoded pixels without further loss. It cannot restore detail that AVIF compression already removed, and the file will usually be bigger than the AVIF.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion runs in your browser using your own device, so the files are not sent to Convert In Place or anyone else. See how it works for a way to check this yourself.
Is there a limit on file size or number of files?
You can use it as often as you like. One batch holds up to 200 files, and each file can be up to 200 MB. Large files and long batches depend on the memory of your device, and phones handle less than computers.
