Why convert GIF to PNG
GIF is limited to 256 colors per frame, while PNG stores full color and a smooth transparent edge. Converting a GIF to PNG is the usual way to get a still, editable picture from it, for example from an animated sticker or an old graphic.
Typical situations
- Getting a still picture out of an animated GIF
- Opening an old GIF graphic in a program that prefers PNG
- Keeping the transparent background of a GIF in a more flexible format
What to watch for
A PNG holds a single image, so an animated GIF is converted to its first frame only and the animation is lost. Converting does not add colors that the GIF did not have, and the PNG may be larger than the GIF for simple pictures.
Tips for better results
- Check which frame comes first, because that is the picture you will get.
- If you only need a smaller file, GIF to JPG gives a lighter result for photographic frames.
- A PNG made from a GIF still has only the colors that were in the GIF.

Frequently asked questions
Can I convert an animated GIF to PNG?
Yes, but only the first frame is saved, because a PNG holds one still picture. To keep every frame you would need a tool that exports each frame separately.
Does GIF to PNG keep transparency?
Yes. Transparent pixels in the GIF stay transparent in the PNG.
Why is my PNG bigger than the GIF?
For simple graphics GIF can be very small, and PNG stores more color information. The PNG is usually the better format for editing, not always the smaller one.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion runs in your browser using your own device, so the files are not sent to Convert In Place or anyone else. See how it works for a way to check this yourself.
Is there a limit on file size or number of files?
You can use it as often as you like. One batch holds up to 200 files, and each file can be up to 200 MB. Large files and long batches depend on the memory of your device, and phones handle less than computers.
