Why convert HEIC to PNG
PNG is a good target when you plan to edit the picture further. Because PNG is lossless, saving it again and again will not add new compression damage the way repeated JPG saves do.
Typical situations
- Editing a phone photo in software that works best with lossless files
- Placing a photo into a design where you may add transparency or text later
- Archiving a picture without adding a second round of JPG compression
What to watch for
A PNG made from a photo is usually much larger than the HEIC or JPG original, because PNG stores every pixel without lossy compression. If the goal is only to share the picture, JPG gives a far smaller file. The PNG cannot recover detail that HEIC compression already removed.
Tips for better results
- Expect a much bigger file than the HEIC. A photo from a recent phone can grow to several megabytes as PNG.
- If you only need to email or upload the photo, HEIC to JPG gives a far smaller file.
- Large batches take longer and use more memory, so convert 20 to 30 photos at a time on a phone.

Frequently asked questions
Will converting HEIC to PNG make the file bigger?
Usually yes, often by a large factor. HEIC compresses photos aggressively, while PNG keeps all pixel data. Expect a noticeably larger file.
How do I convert HEIC to PNG on a Mac or Windows?
Use the converter above on either system, or follow the built in steps for Preview on a Mac and Paint on Windows described in the section above.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion runs in your browser using your own device, so the files are not sent to Convert In Place or anyone else. See how it works for a way to check this yourself.
Is there a limit on file size or number of files?
You can use it as often as you like. One batch holds up to 200 files, and each file can be up to 200 MB. Large files and long batches depend on the memory of your device, and phones handle less than computers.
