Why convert JPG to WebP
Photos for a website are often the heaviest part of a page. WebP can store a comparable-looking photo in a smaller file, which is why site owners convert JPG images to WebP.
Typical situations
- Reducing the size of photos used on a blog, shop or portfolio
- Preparing hero images for a site where page speed matters
- Converting a batch of product photos in one go
What to watch for
Re-encoding a JPG is lossy twice: the WebP is built from an already compressed image. Use the original source file when you have it, and check the result at your chosen quality.
Tips for better results
- Start with quality 80. WebP at that setting often looks similar to a high quality JPG at a smaller size.
- Do not convert a JPG that is already heavily compressed, because the WebP will repeat its flaws.
- Check how your website or CMS handles WebP before you upload, since some older tools still reject it.

Frequently asked questions
Is JPG to WebP conversion reversible?
You can convert back, but quality lost during either compression step does not return. Keep your original JPG files as the master copy.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion runs in your browser using your own device, so the files are not sent to Convert In Place or anyone else. See how it works for a way to check this yourself.
Is there a limit on file size or number of files?
You can use it as often as you like. One batch holds up to 200 files, and each file can be up to 200 MB. Large files and long batches depend on the memory of your device, and phones handle less than computers.
