Options

How to use this converter

  1. Add your JPG files by dragging them onto the box or choosing them from your device.
  2. Adjust the options if you want to, then choose Compress.
  3. Download each JPG file, or use the ZIP button to get several at once.

Why compress a JPG

Upload forms, job portals, school and government sites and email programs often cap the size of a file, while phone photos are commonly several megabytes. Compressing a picture to a target size removes that obstacle without opening an image editor.

Typical situations

What to watch for

Compression is lossy. The tool lowers the JPG quality first, and if that is not enough it also reduces the pixel dimensions in small steps until the file fits the limit. A very small limit on a large photo therefore costs sharpness. If even the lowest setting cannot reach the limit, the tool tells you the smallest size it could make.

Tips for better results

Other ways to do it without Convert In Place

Reduce a JPG on a Mac with Preview

Open the picture in Preview, choose File, then Export, pick JPEG and drag the Quality slider while watching the file size shown below it.

Reduce a JPG on Windows with Paint

Open the picture in Paint, choose Resize, reduce the percentage or pixel size, then use File, Save as, JPEG picture. A smaller picture means a smaller file.

Frequently asked questions

How do I compress a JPG to under 100 KB?

Add the photo, open Options, choose Under 100 KB as the maximum file size and download the result. The tool looks for the highest quality that still fits and reduces the dimensions only when it has to.

How do I reduce a JPG to 200 KB or 500 KB?

Use the same Options menu and pick Under 200 KB or Under 500 KB. You can also choose 20 KB, 50 KB, 100 KB, 300 KB, 1 MB or 2 MB.

Does compressing a JPG lower its resolution?

Only when lowering quality is not enough to reach your limit. In that case the picture is scaled down in small steps, and each result shows the size you got.

How do I compress many photos at once?

Add all the photos together. They are compressed one after another and you can download everything in one ZIP.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion runs in your browser using your own device, so the files are not sent to Convert In Place or anyone else. See how it works for a way to check this yourself.

Is there a limit on file size or number of files?

You can use it as often as you like. One batch holds up to 200 files, and each file can be up to 200 MB. Large files and long batches depend on the memory of your device, and phones handle less than computers.
