How to use this converter
- Add a square logo or picture. PNG works best, and JPG, WebP, SVG and other pictures also work.
- In Options choose the icon sizes: the website set (16, 32 and 48), the full Windows set or a single 256 by 256 icon.
- Press Create ICO and download the ICO file. Several pictures give several ICO files, which you can also take as a ZIP.
Why make an ICO file
Browsers ask a site for favicon.ico when no other icon is declared, and Windows uses ICO files for program and shortcut icons. One ICO file can hold several sizes of the same picture, so the system picks the best one.
Typical situations
- Creating a favicon.ico for a website
- Making a custom icon for a Windows program or shortcut
- Turning an SVG or PNG logo into an icon that older software accepts
What to watch for
ICO is made for small square pictures. A picture that is not square is fitted inside the square with transparent space around it. The largest size inside an ICO is 256 by 256 pixels, and a small source image cannot be enlarged without becoming soft, so start from a sharp image at least as large as the biggest size you choose. PNG, JPG, WebP, SVG and other pictures all work as the source.
Tips for better results
- Use a simple picture with bold shapes, because details disappear at 16 pixels.
- A transparent PNG keeps its transparency inside the ICO, so the icon blends into any background.
- Test the result in a browser tab at 16 pixels before you publish it.

Frequently asked questions
Which sizes should I put in a favicon.ico?
The option for websites includes 16, 32 and 48 pixels, which covers browser tabs, bookmarks and shortcuts. The Windows option adds larger sizes up to 256 pixels for desktop and taskbar icons.
Does an ICO file hold more than one size?
Yes. An ICO can contain several images of different sizes, and the tool writes every size you select into the same file.
Can I convert JPG or SVG to ICO?
Yes. JPG, WebP, SVG, GIF and other pictures are accepted. A JPG has no transparency, so the icon will have a solid background.
Are the images inside the ICO PNG or bitmap?
The sizes are stored as PNG images, a form of ICO that Windows has supported since Windows Vista and that browsers read as favicons.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion runs in your browser using your own device, so the files are not sent to Convert In Place or anyone else. See how it works for a way to check this yourself.
Is there a limit on file size or number of files?
You can use it as often as you like. One batch holds up to 200 files, and each file can be up to 200 MB. Large files and long batches depend on the memory of your device, and phones handle less than computers.
