Why convert TIFF to PNG
PNG keeps image data without lossy compression and opens in browsers and most editors, so it is a convenient replacement for TIFF when you do not need print-production features.
Typical situations
- Moving a scan to a lossless format that browsers can display
- Preparing a diagram or drawing from a TIFF for a web page or document
- Keeping scan quality without the size of an uncompressed TIFF
What to watch for
Only the first page of a multi-page TIFF is converted. Special TIFF features used in professional printing, such as CMYK color or embedded layers, are not preserved in a plain PNG. Very large scans can be slow or run out of memory on phones.
Tips for better results
- PNG keeps all the pixels, so text scans stay crisp, but photographic scans become large.
- Print oriented color setups such as CMYK are not carried over, so check colors on screen.
- Only the first page of a multi-page TIFF is converted.

Frequently asked questions
Will TIFF to PNG lose quality?
The pixel data is kept without lossy compression. What can change is color handling, because PNG is an RGB format and does not carry print-oriented color setups.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion runs in your browser using your own device, so the files are not sent to Convert In Place or anyone else. See how it works for a way to check this yourself.
Is there a limit on file size or number of files?
You can use it as often as you like. One batch holds up to 200 files, and each file can be up to 200 MB. Large files and long batches depend on the memory of your device, and phones handle less than computers.
